Chapter 1

Another Day of High School

May 10, 2022

My name is Carl Adams, I am 17 and currently sitting World History and am bored out of my mind. My father drilled this into my head years ago, just like most of my subjects.

Guess I should explain. My father is one of the Heads of “Dragon Protection Services”, along with my two uncles. All of them joined the military right out of high school. My father, Dean, was a proud member of the Marines, Uncle John a Navy Seal and Uncle Charles Army's “Screaming Eagles” 101st Airborne Division.

While enlisted they stayed in contact and discussed the future. They loved the military, but hated being away from family. After they all were married and had children it became even harder. So they talked about what they could do and finally decided  private security was a possibility. They started researching what was needed and how to get started.

Uncle John, the oldest, current tour ended first and started the process. Over the next few years they found an old government facility that went up for auction in Northern California. My dad would complain that it wasn't a closed military base, he said it would have been so much easier to fit their needs with less reconstruction. My mother would then turn to me and say the refit wasn’t as bad as he made it out to be.

I used to love following them around and watching them train new recruits and wanted to learn as well. Guess they got tired of that and finally started teaching me hand to hand combat when I was only 8. Slowly other things were added, like school subjects. History, math, science, reading, etc. all hammered into me. I graduated high school at 13. It was a home schooling system and I would be in school and then no school meant training in the business. I learned everything from combat techniques to supplies to running everything in the office and keeping the business going. I could run every part of the business, except connections.

The 3 of them had those connections. They had connections still enlisted and some out. So if they needed a person trained in a specific field, they just made calls and would get a heads up when someone was leaving the military.

I know what you’re thinking if I graduated at 13 why am I in high school at 17? Well shortly after I graduated, the DPS got a new contract to guard a princess from Europe. She would be attending a private academy in upstate New York and they wanted extra security while she was there. Since they couldn't have grown men following her around, they pitched me. My mother was not happy. She said, “He isn't an employee and it is on the other side of the country away from backup. He can't be put in that situation for a first assignment even if he was an employee!” Well long story short my mother worked out a deal for me to join DPS, temporarily.

I would attend Highland Private Academy as a freshman, at 14, starting in the fall. My duty was to protect Princess Mia, who is from a small European country (I was never told the name of the country, I was told for security concerns I didn't need to know). She would have three other bodyguards other than myself, plus more members of DPS working in town as backup.

So I would be moving to Highland Private Academy, a boarding school.

After moving I had a greeting setup by my father so we could set up the best way to make sure she was safe. I learned that her best friend Akeno was one of her bodyguards and one of us would be with her at all times. Either her, I or both would be in each of her classes. Akeno would be her dorm-mate and I would be in the closest boys dorm in case of emergency.

And that brings us back to now. I was never told who the other two bodyguards were, guess it is a good thing because it means there was no reason to meet them. There were a lot of rumors about me and Mia and Akeno, obviously I guess since we spent so much time together and neither of them dated any guys at school. I understand why, I mean if I was dating a girl and another guy was always there I would be wondering WTF was going on.

We have finished all our finals and are just going through the motions till the end of the year. I am sitting by the window in the last row, Mia is sitting in the seat next to me. Red hair, green eyes and the most beautiful girl in school. Any guy who sees her falls in love with her instantly, so many guys have confessed to her the last four years. On Mia’s other side is Akeno, who has also been confessed to a lot as well, with black hair and violet eyes (2nd most beautiful girl in school). So yes, every guy hated me.

Little whispered conversations can be heard around the classroom even though the teacher is talking about the finals we finished last week. I am going to miss this, this is what high school should be like not homeschooling and graduating at 13. I couldn't enjoy it like normal since it was work, but it was better than what I actually did.

I scan the grounds out the window of the 3rd floor classroom and everything seems normal. I glance towards the door and see a boy looking in the window looking at Akeno, guessing she is going to be confessed to again. I feel sorry for the guys, but at the same I have to wonder why they keep confessing. I asked them once what they say to the boys and they both said they tell them they already have someone they like. I guess the guys are hoping they are the guys. I heard one guy actually was surprised when they were told that and said, “That's what I heard, you mean I am not the guy?” Wow, I mean conceded much. When I looked again he was gone.

Still ten minutes left in class and then one more for the day. I gotta stay alert, but it is hard when everyone is going through the motions including the teacher.

I was checking the grounds again and there was a loud crashing/tearing sound. I was no longer bored, I was on full alert. What was that? Everything was very quiet and then we heard the voice.
