Chapter 3
On Standby
I dug into my pocket for my earpiece.
“Eagle to base.” I called on the radio.
“Good to hear from you Eagle, tell me I didn’t imagine all that.” Replied a female voice.
“If you did, you were not alone. Have you heard from Home Base?”
“Yes, they are contacting Snow White’s father to see what he wants to do. I will contact you as soon as I get word.”
“Roger.”
I turned to Mia and told her Home Base was contacting her father.
“Thank you. I think I will call my mother then.” Mia replied and walked to the corner of the room.
“I’ll be out in the hall.” I told the other three.
I was out there for a few minutes when I got a call from base. “Eagle, how do you read?”
“Loud and clear base. What’s the word?” I really want to know how they are taking this back at home.
“The client is grounding his plane like what was suggested. He wants Snow White’s protection to stay at the school for the time being. The school was contacted and they will be making an announcement in the next couple of days, but are leaning towards ending the school year early.”
“Seems like the smart thing to do, glad this didn’t happen a couple of weeks ago before finals were completed. It might be crazy getting all the kids out with no planes flying. So I guess Snow White’s party will stay here or we will move to Home Base?” I ask.
“It hasn’t been decided but I would bet on moving them with us, probably by train.”
“Thanks for the update base.”
I turned around and knocked on the door and said it was me, Akeno opened the door for me. Mia was off the phone so we discussed what we learned. It turns out the god was speaking to minds around the world in the language the people understood best. Things are hectic around the world and governments are not sure if this is a threat or not. Most countries have stopped air travel for the time being, the only exception is military aircrafts. An announcement for the cancellation of classes until further notice was heard and a few minutes later we heard kids coming back to the dorm so I headed back to my room after leaving a non-lethal gun with Akeno.
It took about 15 minutes to get back to my dorm since boy’s and girl’s dorms are on opposite sides of campus. I also was in no hurry as I thought things through.
When I got to my dorm there were guys outside talking about becoming explorers and finding rare items. I guess the rich and powerful still want more money. To be fair I guess their parents are the rich ones. Maybe they are just looking for a way to separate from their expected future. I know I was doing that.
Alan, a guy in the room next to mine, called out to me, “Carl! I heard you ran out of the classroom, were you scared?” Him and some other guys started laughing.
Tim from my class said, “He ran out with Mia and Akeno.”
So questions started about why I left with them and what we did. I was told never to reveal my duty unless Mia wanted to reveal it and I knew she didn’t want it known she was a princess.
I told them I didn’t have time to talk, I wanted to get to my room and call home.
I went up to my room and called my mother.
My mother answered right away, “Carl, I am glad you called.”
“Hi mom. So has the shit hit the fan?”
“Hehe, I guess you could say that.”
“I don’t remember this being on the possible situations to be prepared for board. I guess it falls under the ‘unlikely’ section.” I sighed.
“I just got back from the office and your father said the school is going to close early and send kids home a little at a time. They are in the planning stage and you should be in the second departing group.”
“What about Snow White and company?”
“90% chance they will be joining you on a train here. So the office is busy setting everything up so you're set when everything is announced.”
“So a bedroom suite, plus a bedroom next to each other. Will Kayla be traveling with us?” I ask.
“Kayla will travel as backup, but they still don’t want people to know she is with you. So she may be in the next car. Remember other students will be on the train as well.”
“I know, no acting like we know each other.”
Kayla is the female voice I was talking to on the earpiece.
“Are you scared, Carl?”
“Scared? No. I am curious though. This Explorer sounds interesting, it opens other options for people.”
“Are you thinking of becoming an Explorer, I thought you were going to stay with DPS?” She sounded worried.
“I am just saying it opens options for people. The guys here have been talking about it since they returned to the dorm.”
I told her some of the conversations I have heard people talking about and she told me what has happened there. After about 20 minutes we hung up.
I moved to my bed and leaned against the wall. Do I want to leave DPS? My first priority is Mia, I will stay with her till she is safely handed back over to their head of security like every year. Becoming an Explorer though, I guess any skill they give me for that would help with being a bodyguard till the job is done.
